Every family has their problems. It is so easy to be hard on yourself as a parent when things go wrong, but the truth is that no one is perfect. However, how you solve these issues can make a significant impact on your family that can last for years. Family mediation services are one type of mediation that we provide at our Del Mar and Banker’s Hill offices. Many people don’t quite know what family mediation services consist of. We are happy to break it down step-by-step so you can make an informed decision in choosing the right place.
1. Do Your Research
There are many San Diego family mediators, but not all of them are the same. Not only will you want to make sure your mediator is qualified, but you also need to check out their style. Each family mediation service will have its unique way to discuss and solve a conflict. You may want to call their office and have a brief discussion with them to see if it may be a good fit for your family.
2. Talk About Mediation with Your Family
For mediation to be effective, everyone needs to participate. Make sure that everyone is on board to discuss the issue that is causing a problem. It is ok if they aren’t 100% quite yet, but see if they are open to coming in for a consult. They will be able to gain more insight into the process and make a decision at a later time.
3. Attend a Consultation
Most mediators will provide this service for free; others may charge an hourly fee. The consult is about getting to know the mediator, their personality, and problem-solving style. You can bring basic questions with you, but keep in mind that you won’t get to the heart of your issue during the consult. The meeting tends to be quite short, typically 30-45 minutes. After the meeting, you should have a good idea if family mediation services are right for you.
